Nepal is synonymous to mountains. We are a country of climbers and the Sherpa people in particular are known worldwide for their ability to endure extreme conditions to reach the top. Some of the greatest feats of courage, bravery and endurance have come in the world of mountaineering. Mountaineers have created history and set records. They are a source of inspiration to millions of people. Their achievements have left a legacy that undoubtedly serves as inspiration to millions of people from all walks of life. Chhurim Sherpa is now part of this legacy. In May of 2011, at the age of 27, she became the first woman to successfully climb Mt.Everest two times in a single climbing season. She had reached the summit on May 12 and a week later on May 19 of 2011. What makes her achievement even more spectacular is the fact that she had done this with no prior summits on Everest.

I take this opportunity to officially announce that Miss Chhurim Sherpa of Taplejung has been awarded the Guinness World Record for being the first female climber to have summited Mt Everest in a single climbing season. Mr. Craig Glenday, Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Record Ltd., had sent the certificate to my address and requested me to hand over the honours to Miss Chhurim Sherpa on behalf of Guinness World Record Ltd. The award ceremony took place during a function organized by Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in Kathmandu on 25th February 2013 in the presence of the chief guest, Mr Posta Bahadur Bogati, Minister of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation for the Government of Nepal.
