Многие из вас смотрели по ТВ в апреле 6 серий фильма Дискавери "Эверест - за гранью возможного". Профессионально снятый фильм был очень симпатичен, но, по сути, это ода организатору коммерческих восхождений Расселу Брайсу. Рассел там такой душка - и за смерть шерпа переживает, и клиентам как отец родной и т.д. и т.п. Фильм снят прошлой весной, а в этом году сотрудничество Рассела и Дискавери продолжилось. Там же, на классическом маршруте на Эверест со стороны Тибета, снимался фильм о восхождении Мэллори и Ирвина. С этой целью была организована американская экспедиция Altitude Everest Expedition, участники которой - Конрад Анкер (США) и Лео Хулдинг (Великобритания) играли главные роли в фильме. Идея была в том, что команда дождется, пока с горы схлынет волна весенних восходителей, герои переоденутся в одежду, имитирующую экипировку Мэллори и Ирвина, и попытаются пройти участок Второй ступени, не пользуясь веревками и лестницами, причем сделают это именно в июне, согласно историческим фактам.

Все произошло. Поднялись они на вершину. Конечно, при полном обеспечении "конвейера Брайса" - шерпы, кислород, перила, лагеря и пр. По результатам экспедиции по всему миру был распространен пресс-релиз... и что же там написано?

"Today, two of the world's leading climbers, America's Conrad Anker and Britain's Leo Houlding, are the first people to free climb the famous North East Ridge of Everest," it said. "This is the first confirmed true, i.e. unaided, ascent of the route." "Сегодня два лидера мирового альпинизма - американец Конрад Анкер и британец Лео Хулдинг - стали первыми, кто свободным лазанием прошли Северо-Восточный гребень Эвереста. Это первое достоверное прохождение маршрута без страховки"

Далее: "All confirmed ascents of this route used a ladder bolted (in 1975) to the Second Step, a 100-foot rock wall just beneath Everest's summit at 8,600m." "Все известные восхождения по этому маршруту совершались с использованием лестниц, установленных на Второй ступени (30-метровая стенка недалеко от вершины Эвереста на высоте 8600) в 1975 году"

Ну и ну! Веселенький релиз!
А что, до этих ребят никто, значит, Вторую ступень без лестниц не проходил?

Может, участники Altitude Everest не знали фактов?

Да нет же, почему - знали. Факты им настойчиво сообщали - например, редакция ExWeb.

Насчет "two of the world's leading climbers": Конрад пишет о себе - "...совершив самое высокое в мире скальное восхождение..." ("performing the world's highest rock climb")

И вся эта ахинея распространилась по миру.

Итак,
Очевидно, что Конрад и Лео НЕ "первые, кто свободным лазанием прошли Вторую ступень".
И это НЕ "первое действительное восхождение по этому маршруту без страховки". И вовсе НЕ "все совершенные ранее восхождения совершались с помощью лестниц на Второй ступени..."

Северо-Восточное ребро - это классический маршрут. Его прошли тысячи людей, сотни из которых - прямо перед Конрадом и Лео. Лезли точно так же, за исключение сотни футов, которые, якобы, герои первыми прошли "свободным лазанием, страхуя друг друга".

Два примера: Вторую ступень свободным лазанием прошел в 1985 году Оскар Кадиак (Oscar Cadiach) и в 2001 Тео Фрицше (Theo Fritsche).
(Для справки - В 1960 китайцы, первопроходцы маршрута, пользовались питонами и вставали на плечи друг другу)
Подробности восхождения Оскара широко публиковались, соло-восхождение Тео подтверждает Oswald Oelz - известный швейцарский специалист по горной медицине, партнер Месснера, сам взошедший в 1978 на Эверест и в 1985 на Шиша Пангму.

(в материалах ExWeb далее идет дискуссия по поводу того, что именно можно называть "free climb" применительно ко Второй ступени на маршруте на Эверест - например, подразумевает ли это использование ледоруба, кошек, плеча друга и т.д.)
Историк JochenHemmleb ответил на многочисленные вопросы ExWeb касательно восхождения Тео, ссылаясь на свое интервью с ним, опубликованное на немецком и английском языке. И оба они - Оскар и Тео - признают, что нынешняя "опупея" американской экспедиции даже и близко не стоит с "выдающимися восхождениями на Эверест" - такими, как, например, восхождение русских по Северной стене - там лестниц не было, Конрад!

Хочется добавить и факт из истории отечественного альпинизма:
В 2003 году участник Петербургской Юбилейной экспедиции "Эверест 2003" Николай Тотмянин тоже прошел этот участок свободным лазанием. Николай совершал восхождение без кислорода. Оказавшись перед Второй ступенью в длиннейшей очереди на перила и лестницы, он понял, что простоит тут часы, неизбежно получив обморожения. (Кстати, более сотни людей, стоявших в той самой очереди, получили серьезные обморожения, согласно свидетельству Дмитрия Прютца, доктора нашей экспедиции - он слушал все радио-переговоры с лагерями, базой и отдельными восходителями, а позже лечил в базе обмороженных из разных экспедиций). Николай принял решение отстегнуться от перил и обойти без страховки всю эту толпу - это был единственный шанс достичь вершины, не поморозившись. Все прошло удачно. В тот год Тотмянин стал единственным восходителем на Эверест, не пользовавшимся кислородом.

И вообще - в экспедиции Altitude Everest не было НИЧЕГО, что бы не было сделано до них.

Понятно, что причина появления такого сногсшибательного релиза была проста - расскажи парни правду о своем проекте - никто бы и не стал про них писать в медиа. Ну, переоделись в винтажные костюмы и прошли участок, отодвинув кусок металла, а в остальном лишь повторили то же, что до них сделали тысячи людей - такие новости заинтересовали бы разве что местечковую прессу. Поэтому им нужно было обозначить себя как "НОМЕР ОДИН" в чем-то важном - продается только это. Пришлось сочинить эту лажу.

А может, не стоило глумиться над Мэллори, который, достигнув подножия Эвереста, произнес знаменитое: "Что мы можем здесь покорить? Только самих себя..."

First True Climb of North East Ridge Route Completed

Today, two of the world's leading climbers, America's Conrad Anker and Britain's Leo Houlding, are the first people to free climb the famous North East Ridge of Everest. This is the first confirmed true, i.e. unaided, ascent of the route. The Altitude Everest Expedition 2007 is part of a feature documentary investigating whether Mallory and Irvine could have been the first men to summit Everest, in 1924. 

All confirmed ascents of this route used a ladder bolted (in 1975) to the Second Step, a 100-foot rock wall just beneath Everest's summit at 8,600m. George Mallory and Sandy Irvine would have faced the formidable Second Step without this additional climbing aid on their fateful 1924 Expedition. The Chinese authorities have given special permission for the removal of the fixed ladder and ropes, enabling Houlding and Anker to confront the Second Step very much as Mallory and Irvine might have done 83 years earlier.
Producer, Anthony Geffen said, 'This is a unique and remarkable achievement by two of the world's leading climbers, and adds further weight to the tantalising possibility that George Mallory and Sandy Irvine were the first men to summit Everest.'

The Altitude Everest Expedition 2007 is a major multi-platform documentary project that includes a theatrical film, a behind-the-scenes documentary and an interactive website. The www.ueverest.com website is one of the most innovative and ambitious online experiences yet to be launched. The daily expedition diary includes video despatches from the climbers as they make their ascent to the highest point on earth, photographs from the mountain, and personal insights from the climbers and key members of the expedition team. In 2008, the feature length documentary film of this expedition will be premiered theatrically under VOOM HD Networks' new theatrical initiative VOOM HD Pictures and released worldwide thereafter. In conjunction with the release of the film, a behind-the-scenes documentary will also air in 2008 on VOOM's RUSH HD, a high-definition channel dedicated to extreme adventure sports.

The Altitude Everest Expedition 2007 is led by world class explorer and mountaineer Conrad Anker. Anker discovered Mallory's body lying on the mountain in 1999, 75 years after Mallory was last seen climbing into the clouds near the summit. Anker is searching for the real man behind the Mallory legend, seeking to resolve the great mystery Mallory and Irvine left behind - were they the first men to climb to the top of the world's highest mountain? Anker, named as the world's Number One adventurer in 'Outside' magazine, has climbed the world's most technically challenging terrain, but ever since he discovered Mallory's body, Anker has been obsessed by the mystery of his disappearance.

Anker is accompanied by British climber Leo Houlding. Houlding has set a blazing trail through the climbing world, specialising in speed climbing and Base jumping. As well as appearing on the BBC's Top Gear programme when he raced Jeremy Clarkson up the face of the Verdon Gorge in France (while Clarkson drove up), Houlding has free climbed the El Niсo route in Yosemite and recently completed the first free ascent of the Cassarotto pillar on Fitzroy in Patagonia. Anker and Houlding are supported by specialist high altitude cameramen and a back-up team that includes technical and medical support. The expedition is being coordinated by Russell Brice, one of the most professional leaders of all guided expeditions to the Himalayas.

The Altitude Everest Expedition 2007 has taken the latest high-definition cameras to the summit of Everest to retrace George Mallory's the last steps. Three decades before Everest was conquered by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, Mallory stood higher, quite literally, than anyone before him. In June 1924 Mallory, along with his climbing partner Sandy Irvine, was spotted just a few hundred yards short of the summit before a snowstorm closed in. They were never seen alive again. The 2007 expedition team are investigating Mallory and Irvine's last journey in forensic detail; testing the durability of their clothing and equipment in the unforgiving conditions of Everest; and piecing together eyewitness accounts - all to reconstruct Mallory and Irvine's final, fateful hours.

The project has been put together by Altitude Films, which has hired the award-winning Atlantic Productions to co-produce the film.
